GMA preempts Cabinet resignations?

The political opposition said President Arroyo's call for the resignation of members of her Cabinet is a "desperate move" to preempt the announcements of resignations of some senior government officials.

Senator Sergio Osmeña said late in the afternoon of Thursday, hours before the President delivered her "very important announcement," at least nine Cabinet members were already about to resign.

Osmeña said the President's announcement failed to address the crisis she is facing.

A Cabinet reshuffle to purge officials close to First Gentleman Mike Arroyo is supposed to be among the first major reforms that Malacañan planned to save the Arroyo presidency.

Early Thursday, she announced the appointment of Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn, a close friend of former president Estrada, to head an anti-jueteng task force.

On Wednesday, she also announced the appointment of Justice Romeo Brawner, presiding judge on the Court of Appeals, as the new commissioner of the Commission on Elections.
